Abia State Arrests 109-Year-Old Akara Seller and 65 Others for Skipping Sanitation Exercise

The Abia State Government on Saturday arrested a 109-year-old akara seller and 65 others for failing to participate in the June monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

A total of 66 defaulters were apprehended across the state. Seven individuals were discharged on health and student-related grounds, while nine were assigned community service.

The 109-year-old akara seller, Ma Chidinma Eluwa, who operates on Owerri Road, was released without any fine. She assured authorities that she would fully comply with the exercise next time.

Following the low turnout, state officials warned that they may resort to forceful enforcement of the sanitation exercise. Environmental officers expressed concern that poor compliance was reversing years of progress, leaving markets and streets buried under refuse, particularly after the exercise had not been held for the past three months.

Speaking after the exercise, the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Philemon Ogbonna, represented by the Head of Population Control and Environmental Health, Mrs. Happiness Akpulonu, said “brute force” may become unavoidable.

“We were overwhelmed today. My team could not clear all the refuse we were meant to clear. Residents in Umuahia especially respond better to enforcement than advice. We may have to stop advising them and start enforcing compliance,” she stated.

Mrs. Akpulonu blamed the decline on the months without sanitation activities, which led to massive waste piles, especially at Orie Ugba Market and other major markets. The commissioner also called on local government chairmen to mobilise residents on clean-up days and strengthen supervision.

Hon. Kalu Mba-Nwoke, Chairman of the House Committee on Environment and member representing Ohafia South State Constituency, attributed the poor compliance to three months of inactivity. He urged Abians to treat cleanliness as a daily responsibility rather than a one-day government directive.

“Environmental sanitation must be continuous. Even without government directives, we should clean our surroundings because it is our duty,” Hon. Mba-Nwoke said. He also highlighted blocked drainages at Eket Street by Owerri Road and called on relevant agencies to address them.

In a show of solidarity, Alhaji Yaro Danladi, leader of the Northern Community in Abia State and Chairman of the Northern Traditional Council for the South-South and South-East, reaffirmed his community’s support for the monthly exercise. Members of the Northern Community actively participated in the clean-up.

Alhaji Danladi noted that the sanitation exercise is vital for preventing diseases such as malaria by reducing mosquito breeding sites. He commended Governor Alex Otti for his commitment to people-oriented policies and urged all residents to embrace environmental sanitation as a shared responsibility for a cleaner, healthier Abia State.

A young man identified as Ekene Agala is recovering from severe injuries after being subjected to brutal “jungle justice” by estate security personnel following a theft accusation that has since unraveled, according to updates shared by human rights advocate Harrison Gwamnishu.

The incident reportedly occurred in an estate in Enugu, where Agala was accused by a woman of stealing ₦2 million from her residence. The accuser initially claimed to have supporting CCTV footage, prompting estate security and others to physically assault him without further investigation or involvement of formal authorities. Graphic images and videos circulating online show Agala with extensive facial swelling, bruises, and injuries consistent with a severe beating.

In a recent update posted on Sunday, June 28, 2026, Gwamnishu revealed that the woman’s story has changed. She now admits there is no CCTV footage and instead attributes the allegation to a young child who allegedly witnessed the act.

“What happened to Ekene Agala is a painful reminder of why we must never rush to judgment,” Gwamnishu stated, emphasizing the dangers of mob action based on unverified claims.

He announced plans to initiate legal processes to secure justice for Agala and noted gratitude that the victim survived the attack.

The widow of late Nollywood comic actor, John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, has appealed to Nigerians for financial assistance, revealing that she and her children are facing severe economic hardship more than two years after the actor’s death.
The appeal was made during a video interview with content creator King Mitchy on Wednesday, where the actor’s widow and children spoke about the challenges confronting the family.
Speaking emotionally, the widow disclosed that the family had been unable to pay rent and school fees, adding that their electricity supply had been disconnected for about two months due to unpaid bills.
According to her, the family now relies on water from a well and struggles to meet basic needs.
“We fetch water from the well because I have not paid the house rent. They have even cut my lights for two months now. No lights since. Every night we go to look for a place to charge our phones. It’s not easy,” she said.
One of Mr Ibu’s daughters commended her mother for her efforts to keep the family together despite the financial difficulties.
“I want to thank God for my mom. She tries everything she can to feed us, to pay our school fees and to make us happy,” she said.
The widow further revealed that her children risk dropping out of school because of outstanding tuition fees.
“Right now, they can’t go to school again. I can even show you the message the school sent me today,” she said.
King Mitchy, who conducted the interview, said support was being sought to help the family settle school fees, pay outstanding rent and restore electricity to their home.
Mr Ibu, one of Nigeria’s most celebrated comic actors, died on March 2, 2024, at the age of 62, following health complications. His death drew widespread tributes from fans, colleagues and public figures across the country.

Equatorial Guinea Vice President Announces Cabinet Resignation Over Poor Performance

Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, Vice President of Equatorial Guinea, announced on Tuesday that the federal executive council has resigned after failing to meet its performance targets.

In a post on X, Mangue, who is also the son of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, stated that the cabinet had achieved “barely 10 percent” of its goals.

“The rule is simple: public responsibility has to come with results,” Mangue said. “The state puts significant human, material and financial resources at the disposal of the government to address the needs of the population. So the degree of execution achieved is clearly insufficient in relation to the expectations and commitments undertaken.”

Mangue did not specify the exact targets the government had been set.

President Mbasogo, who has ruled Equatorial Guinea since 1979 and is the world’s longest-serving leader, appointed the outgoing government in 2024. Manuel Osa Nsue Nsua, a former longtime head of the National Bank of Equatorial Guinea, was named prime minister and tasked with implementing economic reforms aimed at benefiting the country’s poorest populations.

Despite these efforts, the country’s economy has continued to face a prolonged slowdown, driven by declining oil production, reduced investment, and external shocks. Equatorial Guinea remains heavily dependent on petroleum, with oil and gas accounting for the vast majority of its exports and government revenues.

In a statement, the ruling Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea (PDGE) said the president was dissatisfied with the outgoing government’s management. Mbasogo reportedly criticized the cabinet for failing to implement policies to diversify the economy, particularly in the agricultural sector, which could reduce reliance on imported goods that can be produced locally.

A new government is expected to be appointed in the coming days.
