R. Kelly Formally Appeals to President Trump for Commutation of 31-Year Prison Sentence

Embattled R&B singer R. Kelly has filed a formal request for executive clemency with the U.S. Department of Justice, asking President Donald Trump to commute his 31-year federal prison sentence for racketeering, sex trafficking, and child sexual abuse-related convictions, according to court records.
The application, made public this week by the Office of the Pardon Attorney, seeks a commutation of sentence rather than a full presidential pardon. It remains pending, The Guardian reported Thursday.
Kelly, whose full name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, is currently 59 years old. He was convicted in 2021 in New York on racketeering charges after prosecutors alleged he operated a criminal enterprise that recruited women and underage girls for sexual exploitation and the production of child sexual abuse material. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
In 2022, Kelly was convicted in a separate Chicago federal case on three counts related to child sexual abuse material and three counts of child enticement. He received a 20-year sentence, the majority of which runs concurrently with his previous term, effectively adding one year to his overall imprisonment.
He is serving the combined 31-year sentence at a federal prison in North Carolina and is not eligible for release until January 2046.
Kelly’s attorney, Beau Brindley, has been actively lobbying the Trump administration for more than a year to grant clemency. Last year, Brindley filed an emergency motion seeking the singer’s release to home detention, claiming Kelly’s life was in danger due to an alleged plot involving prison officials to have him killed by another inmate. The court denied that request.
The singer has consistently maintained his innocence and denied all allegations against him.
