Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 general elections, has reportedly sustained a broken right hand while in police custody.

According to a statement posted on Sowore’s official Instagram page, the incident occurred early Thursday morning at the Force Intelligence Department (FID) facility in Abuja, where he was being held.

The post alleged that a team of police officers, led by a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) from the Inspector-General of Police Monitoring Unit, forcefully entered Sowore’s detention cell at around 6 a.m., assaulted him, and subsequently relocated him to an undisclosed location.

“At about 6AM, a police team, headed by a CSP from the IGP Monitoring Unit, forcibly entered Omoyele Sowore’s detention cell at the FID in Abuja, broke his right hand, and transported him to an undisclosed location,” the statement read.

Sowore was reportedly detained on Wednesday after honoring an invitation from the IGP Monitoring Unit.

As of the time of this report, the Nigeria Police Force has yet to officially respond to the allegations.
