The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday directed the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to set up a team of medical experts to evaluate the health condition of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
The court gave the association a period of eight days to carry out the medical examination and submit a detailed report on Kanu’s state of health.
The decision follows concerns raised over the IPOB leader’s wellbeing since his continued detention by the Department of State Services (DSS). His legal team has consistently argued that his health challenges require urgent and comprehensive medical attention beyond what the DSS facility can provide.
By the court’s directive, the NMA is expected to appoint independent specialists across relevant fields of medicine to conduct the assessment. Their findings will play a critical role in determining subsequent rulings on Kanu’s medical care and detention conditions.
The case has once again put a spotlight on the prolonged detention of the IPOB leader, whose trial continues to generate political and legal debate across the country.
