The Federal High Court in Uyo has ordered the interim forfeiture of over ₦1 billion allegedly diverted by Grace Umezurike, the Secretary to the Ebonyi State Government (SSG), and her aide, Ngene Nwanna Onyeabor.
The ruling, delivered on 8 July by Justice Maureen Onyetenu, followed an ex parte application filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
According to court documents, the EFCC accused Umezurike, a professor, and her aide of misappropriating state funds intended for the 2024 Christmas rice distribution program. The funds were allegedly funneled into six separate accounts held at United Bank for Africa (UBA). Four of these accounts reportedly belong to Umezurike, while one—holding ₦1.014 billion—is linked to Onyeabor. The sixth account is registered under the name Affordable Multi Services Nigeria Limited.
The EFCC asked the court to temporarily freeze the accounts for 60 days, pending the outcome of its investigation and possible legal proceedings. It also requested that the respondents and any other interested parties be directed to show cause why the funds should not be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government.
Justice Onyetenu granted all the EFCC’s requests, including an order mandating public notification so other interested parties may come forward.
Governor Nwifuru Responds
In response to the court’s decision, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru urged patience. Speaking during a church service at the Government House Chapel in Abakaliki on Sunday, the governor said his administration would not rush to judgment on the matter and would await further developments.
