The Senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District, Senator Austin Akobundu, has charged youths to dedicate themselves to God and take advantage of their energy and numerical strength to positively influence political discourses and outcomes.
The Senator stated this during the cultural carnival of the Catholic Youth Organisation of Nigeria, CYON’s Rally tagged UmuChukwu 2025, held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the Immaculate Conception Seminary, Ahiaeke, Umuahia, Abia State.
The cultural carnival which brought together youths of the Catholic Diocese of Umuahia saw eight deaneries presenting different Igbo cultural displays, including food, dance, festivals, etc, all to the excitement of guests.
In his speech, Senator Austin Akobundu, who was represented by Chief Jude Chijioke Ndukwe, tasked the youths to remain focused on God and follow the teachings of the Church in all their ways, saying there was no other way anyone could make progress and achieve peace and prosperity.
Reiterating his focus on the welfare and development of youths, Senator Akobundu highlighted his commitment to them through his scholarships, several skills acquisition and empowerment programmes, and promised to do even more as he prepares to mark his second anniversary in the senate. He further informed that part of his strategic partnership with the youths was to always associate with them through such programmes as the cultural carnival which offers him a close opportunity to listen to them and respond to their concerns as much as possible.
He also urged them to take their civic responsibilities seriously by ensuring they participate actively and make their energy and number count in the political process.
Part of the highlights of the event was the traditional breaking of kolanut and a mini-New Yam Festival showcasing the rich Igbo culture.
