The Federal Government has confirmed the shutdown of 13,597,057 social media accounts and the deletion of 58,909,112 offensive posts across platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter).

The disclosure was contained in the 2024 Code of Practice Compliance Report, jointly submitted by major technology companies including Google, Microsoft, and TikTok.

The Code of Practice, introduced by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), is designed to curb harmful online content and promote responsible digital engagement in Nigeria.

According to the report, more than 754,629 user complaints were recorded during the period under review. It further revealed that 420,439 posts initially removed were later reinstated following successful appeals by users.

In a statement on Wednesday, NITDA’s Director of Corporate Communications, Hajiya Hadiza Umar, praised the cooperation of global tech platforms, noting that the initiative reflects government’s commitment to creating a safer and more accountable digital space for Nigerians.
