Umuahia, July 21, 2025 — Hon. Barr. Okey Igwe has firmly debunked a viral social media report suggesting he is set to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to a new coalition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released through the Abia State chapter of the PDP, Barr. Igwe described the claim as “false, speculative, and deliberately misleading.” He affirmed his unwavering loyalty to the PDP and denied having held any political meetings or negotiations with representatives of any rival political group.
According to the statement, the photograph being circulated online, which allegedly spurred the defection speculation, was taken during a chance encounter at a private social event. Barr. Igwe clarified that no political discussions occurred and that the image is being wrongly interpreted to suit a false narrative.
The Abia PDP also used the opportunity to reaffirm that the party remains united and has not entered into any alliance—formal or informal—with any external political platform. The party cautioned against the spread of misinformation, especially during politically sensitive times, stressing that such rumours only serve to create confusion and cast doubts on the integrity of committed party members.
“We urge our members, the media, and the general public to disregard the said report in its entirety,” the statement added.
The party emphasized its ongoing commitment to strengthening internal cohesion, expanding grassroots mobilization, and preparing strategically for the 2027 elections.
