Former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, has dismissed speculations suggesting he is planning to defect from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), affirming his continued loyalty and commitment to rebuilding the party.

Speaking to journalists at his country home in Umuobiakwa, Obingwa LGA, Ikpeazu clarified that his political focus remains on reviving and repositioning the PDP in Abia State and beyond.

“I’m not in contemplation about where to go for now. We are still trying to rebuild the PDP,” Ikpeazu stated. “The PDP has passed through very difficult times. Some of us are prepared to rally courage and muster effort and energy to steady the ship once again.”

Ikpeazu, who governed Abia State from 2015 to 2023 on the PDP platform, remains a key stakeholder in the PDP both within the state and the South East region, emphasized the importance of party loyalty and internal rebuilding over jumping ship in difficult times.

He noted that political setbacks, such as the party’s loss in the 2023 general elections, are not uncommon in democracy. “What matters is how a party responds, learns from its past, and prepares for the future,” he added.

Ikpeazu’s remarks come amid growing internal debates and defections within the PDP at both the state and national levels. However, his reaffirmation of loyalty is seen as a morale booster for party faithful, particularly in Abia State, where the PDP still enjoys strong grassroots support despite recent challenges.

As 2027 gradually approaches, Ikpeazu’s position suggests he will play a central role in the reorganization and revival of the PDP in Abia, working to rebuild structures, mobilize support, and offer a credible opposition voice in the state’s political landscape.
