The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has officially handed over the affairs of the Commission to Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, a National Commissioner, who will now serve as the Acting Chairman.

This temporary handover follows Yakubu’s decision to step aside pending the conclusion of an official engagement, in line with the administrative procedures guiding the operations of the electoral body.

During a brief ceremony at the INEC headquarters in Abuja, Prof. Yakubu expressed confidence in Agbamuche-Mbu’s capacity to steer the Commission effectively, describing her as a “dedicated and experienced public servant” who has served meritoriously as one of INEC’s National Commissioners since her appointment.

In her remarks, Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu thanked Prof. Yakubu for his leadership and assured that the Commission would maintain its commitment to transparency, fairness, and credibility in all electoral activities under her watch.

She also reaffirmed INEC’s readiness to sustain ongoing electoral reforms and ensure smooth preparations for upcoming elections across the country.
