2027: PDP Clears Appolos, 17 Others for Abia Legislative Contest
The Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) has cleared former Chief Press Secretary to former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, Enyinnaya Appolos, and 17 other aspirants to participate in the party’s State House of Assembly primary election slated for May 22, 2025, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Appolos, a media strategist and grassroots mobilizer, emerged as the sole PDP aspirant for the Obingwa West State Constituency seat in the Abia State House of Assembly, a development party stakeholders say reflects growing acceptance of his candidacy across the constituency.
A PDP stakeholder from Obingwa, Elder Ihuoma Ebere, described Appolos as a widely accepted candidate across political divides.
“Enyinnaya Appolos is the candidate of Obingwa West across party lines. He is eminently qualified to represent our people and has what it takes to deliver quality representation in the Abia State House of Assembly. We are happy he has been cleared,” he said.
The PDP State House of Assembly Screening Committee, headed by Chief Obinna Nwachukwu, screened and cleared all aspirants seeking the party’s tickets across various constituencies in Abia State.
Party insiders described the exercise as peaceful, transparent, and in line with the PDP’s constitution and electoral guidelines, stressing that the party was focused on rebuilding and strengthening its structures ahead of future elections.
For Appolos, the clearance marks a significant step in his transition from journalism and media management into active legislative politics. A former Political and Legislative Correspondent, he later served in the administration of former Governor Ikpeazu as Chief Press Secretary and Special Adviser on Media.
Political observers in Obingwa say his emergence as sole aspirant is tied to his longstanding relationship with grassroots leaders, youth groups, party faithful, and community stakeholders.
Supporters believe his background in governance, media, and public affairs positions him to provide effective representation and stronger legislative engagement for the constituency.
The development is seen as part of broader efforts by the PDP to reposition itself in Abia State following the political shifts that emerged after the 2023 elections.
With no opposition within the PDP for the Obingwa West ticket, attention is now turning to Appolos’ broader campaign strategy ahead of the 2027 contest.

ADC Accuses Justice Lifu of Acting in Contempt of Court
The National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, Bolaji Abdullahi, has alleged that Justice Peter Lifu acted in contempt of court by issuing a judgment that deregistered the ADC and four other political parties despite a pending appeal.
According to Abdullahi, the Court of Appeal had directed that no action should be taken on the matter until the appeal is heard on October 27. He argued that proceeding with the judgment before the appellate court’s determination amounts to a disregard for the court’s directive.
“Justice Peter Lifu, the judge who gave the judgment that deregistered the ADC and four other parties, should be arrested. The Appeal Court said don’t act until the case is heard on October 27. He’s acting in contempt of court,” Abdullahi stated.
The remarks add a new dimension to the legal and political controversy surrounding the status of the affected political parties, with the matter expected to be further addressed when the appeal comes up for hearing.

Kwankwaso’s Son Emerges as Kano NDC Deputy Governorship Candidate
KANO — Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso has been announced as the deputy governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Mustapha is the son of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a leading figure in the party and former governor of Kano State.
The announcement comes amid ongoing political realignments within the NDC in Kano. The party recently unveiled Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo as its governorship candidate for the state, following consultations among party stakeholders.
Political observers say the emergence of Mustapha Kwankwaso as running mate is expected to generate discussions within Kano’s political landscape, given his family ties to the influential Kwankwasiyya movement led by his father.
The NDC has continued to position itself as a major opposition force ahead of the 2027 elections, with the party’s leadership expressing confidence in its chances across key states, including Kano.
Party officials are expected to provide further details on the candidature and campaign strategy in the coming days.
