Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office, citing health challenges.
According to a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the former minister stated that his decision to step down was based on medical reasons. President Tinubu has accepted his resignation and expressed appreciation for his service to the nation.
The President is expected to forward the name of a new nominee to the Senate later this week.
Badaru Abubakar, 63, previously served two terms as governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023. He was appointed Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023.
His resignation comes at a time the President has declared a national security emergency, with further details of the plan expected to be announced soon.
The development was disclosed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, in a statement issued on December 1, 2025.
