The Imo State Police Command has dismissed a viral social media video alleging that 14 passengers were kidnapped on Monday, December 1, while travelling from Owerri to Aba through Ngor Okpala.
According to the Command, investigations show that the video did not depict a recent incident but was linked to a case that occurred earlier in the year. Police spokesperson, DSP Okoye Henry, said the old footage was being recycled to cause unnecessary panic among residents. He noted that the victims involved in the earlier incident were eventually released following coordinated security efforts.
Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, urged members of the public to disregard the misleading video and refrain from sharing unverified information capable of heightening tension in the state.
The CP also announced that additional security personnel have been deployed to the Owerri–Aba axis in collaboration with other security agencies and local vigilante outfits to ensure the safety of travellers, especially during the festive season.
Residents were advised to remain calm, stay alert, and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency line: 0803 477 3600..
