The Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the need for political stability and improved governance in the state.
The development was announced in a statement issued by the Director General of Media and Communication in the Governor’s Office, Nuhu Salihu Anka, after consultations with political stakeholders, elders, and supporters across the state.
According to the statement, the decision followed extensive deliberations and was taken in what the governor described as the overriding interest of stability, progress, and sustainable development in Zamfara.
Governor Lawal said persistent internal crises, leadership disagreements, and unresolved structural challenges within the PDP at both the national and state levels influenced his decision to leave the party.
He noted that the situation within the party had created uncertainty and distractions that could hinder effective governance and the delivery of democratic dividends to the people of Zamfara State.
The governor also stressed that his primary responsibility remains ensuring peace, security, and development in the state, adding that aligning with the APC would provide greater political unity and stronger cooperation with the Federal Government.
The final deliberation on the defection reportedly took place at the Government House in Gusau under the coordination of the Deputy Governor alongside senior government officials and key political stakeholders.
Lawal expressed appreciation to members and supporters of the PDP for their support over the years but said the current political realities within the party made the move necessary.
He added that by joining the APC, his administration aims to strengthen unity, improve security, accelerate development, and ensure that Zamfara State benefits from closer collaboration with the Federal Government.
The state government also called on citizens, political leaders, and supporters to remain calm and supportive as the state enters what it described as a new political phase aimed at promoting unity, stability, and development.
